Live Communications Server to Lync Server 2010 Migration Guide from Microsoft

Microsoft has made available for download Live Communications Server to Lync Server 2010 Migration whitepaper, which outlines a migration strategy for migrating from Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Lync Server 2010.

There is no supported migration path directly from Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 to Lync Server 2010, the proposed migration strategy requires you to perform several interim steps to move users to Lync Server 2010.

The migration strategy takes the following phased migration approach:
1. Validate the existing environment as an updated and stable Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 environment where the latest updates are installed and all clients are running Office Communicator 2005.

2. Migrate the Live Communications Server environment to an interim Office Communications Server 2007 R2 environment, leaving all clients running Office Communicator 2005.

3. Decommission all Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 server infrastructure.

4. Upgrade clients to Lync 2010.

5. Move users from the interim Office Communications Server 2007 R2 environment to a Lync Server 2010 environment, with all users upgraded to clients running Lync 2010.

6. Decommission the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 environment.

Note: The final move of clients to Lync Server 2010 requires an update of the account to support enhanced presence. After users have been moved to Lync Server 2010, clients running Office Communicator 2005 cannot sign in.
