Resolve: Application crash in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

If you experience application crash when using Windows Explorer, Microsoft Office applications, Windows Movie Maker on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, then this article may interest you.

This issue may occur because of a known issue in Ole32.dll.

When certain applications implement the IEnumFORMATETC interface but do not implement the IEnumFORMATETC::Next() function correctly, Ole32.dll adds a malformed data structure to the system clipboard. When another process queries the Clipboard later, the processes may receive this malformed data structure. Therefore, heap corruption occurs in this process.

To resolve this issue, visit Microsoft KB2541119 to download and apply the Hotfix.

Note: To apply the hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
– Windows 7
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
– Windows Server 2008 R2
– Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
