Resolve error message ‘One or more system components that the service pack requires are missing’ when you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2

As a part of Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy, Microsoft has earlier announced that support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will end on July 12, 2011. Against this backdrop, Microsoft has recommended that customers/users migrate to the latest supported service pack or product prior to end of support. So, if when you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2), and you receive this error message: ‘Service Pack installation cannot continue. One or more system components that the service pack requires are missing.’ then this article may interest you.

This issue occurs because system components that are required to install Windows Vista SP2 are not present on your computer. A common reason for this problem is that vLite was used to customize the Windows Vista installation and some required system components were removed.

However, to resolve this issue, you are required to use genuine Microsoft software media to reinstall Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 and then install Windows Vista SP2.

For steps on reinstalling Windows on a computer that is running a retail version of Windows Vista and reinstalling Windows on a computer that is running a preinstalled (OEM) copy of Windows Vista, visit Microsoft KB968279.
