FAQs: Windows Phone 7 activation codes

The first time that you sign in with your Windows Live ID on Windows Phone 7 you may see the following message ‘An activation code is required before we can finish setting up your phone. Please contact customer service. You can skip this step and do it later‘ prompting you to enter an activation code.

To complete your Windows Live ID sign in, you’ll have to enter a new activation code and tap activate.

Do note that, you can also tap skip to continue using your phone without signing into Windows Live ID but you won’t be able to access Windows Phone 7 features that require Windows Live ID like Xbox LIVE, Marketplace, and Hotmail.
Also the appearance of the Activation Required screen does not reflect a problem with the Windows Live ID that you’re trying to sign in with.

Below are some frequently asked questions and answers regarding Windows Phone 7 activation codes:

Q1: Why am I being prompted for an activation code?
Ans: Every Windows Phone 7 device is created by using an activation code as part of the manufacturing process. In rare cases, you may be prompted to enter a new activation code before you can complete signing in with your Windows Live ID.

Q2: Should I try signing in with a different Windows Live ID?
Ans: No, trying a different Windows Live ID will not complete the activation process. You will still have to enter a new activation code even with a different Windows Live ID.

Q3: What if I tap skip on the Activation Required screen?
Ans: Tapping skip will close the screen and cancel your Windows Live ID sign in attempt, but you can still use your phone to make calls, run most built-in applications, send text messages, and surf the Internet.

Q4: As soon as I have a new activation code, how do I return to the Activation Required screen?
Ans: The next time that you try to use a feature of Windows Phone 7 that requires Windows Live ID sign in (such as playing a game on Xbox LIVE, downloading an app from Marketplace, or adding a Windows Live email account), you will be prompted to sign in with your Windows Live ID and then prompted for your new activation code.

Here’s how to sign in by adding a Windows Live account to your phone:
– Press the Start button, flick left to the App list, tap Settings, and then tap email & accounts.
– Tap Add an account > Windows Live.
– If you haven’t signed in with a Windows Live ID yet, the Before you sign in screen appears. On this screen, tap Next.
– Tap the Windows Live ID box, and then type your Windows Live ID.
– Tap the Password box, and then type your Windows Live password.
– Tap Sign in. You’ll be able to see the same Activation Required screen, where you can enter your new activation code and tap activate.

Q5: What should I do with my new activation code after I’ve entered it?
Ans: If you ever have to reset your phone back to factory settings, you’ll see the Activation Required screen again when you try to sign in. You can use your new activation code on your phone again – therefore you should keep it in a safe place.

    • Hi Sherzad,

      1. To receive a Windows Phone 7 activation code, you will need to contact Microsoft Customer Service by phone. (There is no option to receive an activation code online.) To reach Microsoft Customer Service, Windows Phone 7 customers in the United States can call 1-800-MICROSOFT.

Contact information for Microsoft Customer Service outside the United States can be found by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide

      2. If your contacts are stored on your PC and you use Microsoft Office Outlook, you might be able to import them into your Windows Live account. Once you import them, your contacts will sync to your phone. More info is available here.
